The Benefits of Christianity

The Benefits of Christianity

Dear Sir,

I see over past weeks letters and editorial comments criticising Christianity for doing nothing that benefits society.

But we must see the distinct difference between what Christianity has done and still does in society and the activity of a group such as the Communist Party. The Communist Party and Maoist group could be criticised for doing nothing more practical than planning the Revolution.

However, right from the arrival of Christianity in New Zealand practical help has been given to those in need. Christian schools, hospitals, orphanages, soup kitchens, etc. have only been superseded by State Social services in recent times. Furthermore, Christians are adapting their resources to provide help for those with a new set of needs. Homes for unmarried mothers, for the elderly, for alcoholics are being provided for instance. And where the need for greater care of Maori culture and language becomes apparent the Churches smartly take need.

It seems to have been the policy of the Communist Party in this country to leave practical help to others while concentrating on political activity. But we can see from the Socialist Action group that this is changing.

Christianity, on its part, is changing it's traditional approach of leaving politics up to others. The Christian principles which provide the basis for a democracy are now distorted, so greater activity on the political front is seen as an integral part of Christian service in society. If one really looks, the benefits of Christianity become clear. The movement for meeting modern needs is well under way.

Yours

Andrew Bates.
