Student Executive Needs Guidance
Student Executive Needs Guidance
A march down town is not the most effective means of agitating for the repeal of the laws against abortion, the Student Representative Council decided last week. The S.R.C. overturned an Executive decision to grant the Women's Abortion Action Committee $50 for the purposes of such a march, and carried a motion stating that no money be given to the W.A.A.C. Although some of the speakers were opposed to any liberalisation of the abortion laws, the majority were against a march on tactical grounds. Some speakers recalled that last year the Abortion Action Committee was outnumbered 3 to 1 by the Roman Catholic dominated Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child in a demonstration in Wellington.
The next meeting of the S.R.C. will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, April 15th in the Union Hall. That evening the Students' Association will hold its A.G.M. This meeting decides the Association's financial commitments for the year and lays down guidelines for the Executive to follow. Judging by its recent performances the Executive needs plenty of guidance. At their last meeting Executive members had so little to talk about that they were reduced to a heated debate about billiard tables and swearing at the rate of one [unclear: ath] every two minutes.
But even that was an improvement on the meeting before last. We reprint the following extract from the Executive Minutes of March 15th for the information and entertainment of students.
