Rugby Trials

A well-attended trial on Saturday 13th March for the Senior Grades showed that the selectors will have plenty to exercise their minds about during the next few weeks. From the numbers available a shadow Senior First team emerged after two of the five spells.

In addition to the experienced core of McDonald, Barrett, Tovey, Gibbons and Shirley, D. White justified his selection in the squad which travelled to Fielding last Saturday. A fit M. Lookman was in fine form at number 8, and must have a real future in this position.

At halfback, D. Hogg again produced the form which made him the Club's number one player in this position before he left for overseas three years ago, while newcomer R. Paterson from Otago demonstrated the great depth in the halfback position within the Club.

Willis and Isaac responded to the call for rapid, smooth passing and because of this Christiansen, Gowland, and Greenwood shone in the three-quarters. Wiggins, Grayson and Brown will serve their sides well at fullback both on attack and defence.

Other forwards to catch the eye included Shirley (a fine lineout jumper), Boswell and Mabin (both useful hookers), and Burgess at number 8, white Jones and Smith together with Hutchison, were prominent in the tight. All the backs selected in the A squad for Feilding last Saturday must augment their enthusiasm and keeness by attaining the degree of fitness necessary to retain one's place in a Senior First team.

If you want to get fit, keep fit, recover fitness, improve fitness or merely sustain your present somewhat indolent metabolism join a fitness class at the gym. Classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm, are designed to cater for all tastes and are decidedly co-educational. If you are a near bedridden motor moron or a bronzed super-fit mesomorphic moron bulging with muscular excess the physical welfare staff can provide for you. The exercise programme is designed to suit all levels of fitness and skill and to enable participants to assess their progress from time to time.

Some of the sports clubs are taking advantage of this unique offer and are using the time as pre-season training, while other clubs are sustaining their fitness for Easter Tournament.

If you are still doubtful about your capacity to withstand hateful exercise or the capacity of the physical welfare staff to keep a straight face while you bend and stretch, why not come and discuss an individual fitness programme with them? Why not join a class on:

Tuesday 5.00-6.00

Wednesday 5.00-6.00

Thursday 5.00-6.00

Salient wants the results of all local sporting activities in which Victoria teams take part, for publication in the form of a table showing the result, the opposing team, and the position in the competition.

It is hoped that in every issue at least two sports clubs will be given extensive coverage as to their planned activities, progress, etc. For this reason Residents and Secretaries of the various clubs should send club results and reports of club activities to Sports Editor, Peter Winter.

If, possible advance notice should be given of sporting functions which could be of interest. It could be arranged for a Salient reporter and photographer to be present.

Last year Harcourt chose to ignore sport in Salient, but this year Two pages of each issue have been allocated to sport coverage. The sport pages should be a reflection of sport at Victoria, so give them your full support.
