Science win Interfac Athletics

Science win Interfac Athletics

The Science faculty reps downed Commerce, who have won for the past three years, at the Annual interfaculty athletics championships at Evans Bay on Saturday 13th March. This was an upset win as Science have usually finished last out of the faculties competing!

This championships meeting, which was primarily for the purpose of selecting Victoria's athletics team for Easter Tournament, saw some first class performances by several athletes.

Victoria's two national champions. Penny Hunt (Womens 100m and 400m), and Phil Keer (Mens 400m) were both competing and easily won their respective races.

Another national champion, Ian Finlayson, of the Commerce faculty, won the high jump with an effort of 6'1". This broke the interfac record established by Peter Hepburn several years ago, and was the only record broken on the day.

Rod Petley (Commerce), the current Universities 5000m champ, retained his interfac title after a tough battle with Ulric Drake (Science). However, in the 1500m he found Euan Robertson of Massey too strong and had to be content with second place.

Massey sent down a strong contingent to compete at Evans Bay. Their best performers were Euan Robertson who effortlessly won the 3000m steeples, and the 1500m; Bruce Hill who won the 800m in 1 min. 50 sec., and Mike Hills who won the 400m hurdles. Both the latter two represented the West Coast North Island Centre at the National Athletic Champs at Inglewood last month.
