Basketball

Otago continued on its winning way, having its third successive win in this sport since it has been played at Winter Tournament.

Otago decisively defeated Vic (29-6), Auckland (45-11) and just scraped home in the final against Canterbury (22-20).

Victoria besides losing to Otago, lost narrowly to Canterbury (34-26) and defeated Auckland 23-19. As Auckland suffered three losses Vic finished up third overall.

Six Vic players, B. Yates, L. Banks, J. Robson, E. Simmons, M. Creevy, T. Fowler, were in the North Island Universities team which lost to the South 35-18.

Brenda Yates and Margot Creevy were also members of the NZU team which triumphed over Otago provinces 24-16.

Brenda Yates (Victoria) clasps her hands after leaping unsuccessfully to Intercept the ball during the New Zealand Universities-Otago basketball match at Tournament. Immediately behind Brenda is Margot Creery (Victoria) who was also playing for the NZU team. Awaiting developments is D. Larkins (Otago). NZU won 24-16.

Table tennis

After winning the table tennis in 1963 and 1965, Victoria has dropped right down near the bottom in inter-university competition in this sport.

Otago was first, again trouncing Victoria 16-3, Auckland 16-3, Canterbury 12-7 and crushing Lincoln College 19-0.

Victoria were also beaten by Auckland (13-6), Canterbury (15-4) and were only able by virtue of a win over Lincoln (15-4) to avoid having that symbol of sporting inadequacy, the wooden spoon, bestowed upon them. Final tournament placings were Otago (1), Canterbury (2), Auckland (3), Victoria (4), Lincoln (5).

Rugby league

This was one sport where Victoria was utterly and completely rubbished finishing bottom of the competition out of the five universities participating.

Auckland and Otago dominated winning three games each and in the final between them the score at the finish was 5-5.

Victoria was thrashed by Auckland 40-0. by Canterbury 27-6, by Otago 19-7 and beaten 24-20 by Massey in a close game.

Two Vic reps, John Haynes and George Rasmussen were selected for the NZU League Team which toured Australia. In the NZU 'B' team which played Otago were 2 other Vic players E. Nathan and R. Burberry.

Judo

This was another sport where Victoria put up a lamentable performance, finishing last behind Auckland, Canterbury and Otago.

Victoria was crushed by Otago 11-1 and by Canterbury 11-1, but did manage to draw with Auckland 6-6.

Otago members A. McGeorge and R. Fris won the lightweight and open weight divisions respectively, both by clear-cut margins.

The final points were Otago (1) 28 pts, Canterbury (2) 23pts Auckland (3) 13pts, Victoria last 8pts.
