Mr R. S. V. Simpson has been appointed Chancellor of the University in succession to Dr P. P. Lynch.

Mr Simpson has an LL.M. from Victoria, and is a barrister and solicitor in Wellington.

His appointment as chairman of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council was announced recently by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the hon D. C. Seath.

He has been associated with Victoria University for more than 30 years.

In 1937 he was chairman of the N.Z. University Students' Association and the next year became the firs00t student representative on the University Council, serving until 1941.

Ten years later he was again elected to the Council.

From 1952 to 1962 he was also a member of the Senate and Executive Committee of the University of New Zealand.

Mr Simpson is a past president of the Wellington District Law Society, a member of the Council of the New Zealand Law Society, honorary secretary of the Society of Notaries, Wellington, and is associated with the Wellington Youth Orchestra and the Missions to Seamen and the Seafarers' Welfare Board for New Zealand

Asked what the responsibilities of the Chancellor were, Mr Simpson said "He's the head of the University. He's responsible to see that the decisions and policies of the Council are implemented."

The Chancellor also does much important work on committees of the Council.

Mr Simpson said that he regarded work on the Appointments Committee as being very important.

Dr P. P. Lynch who retired as Chancellor of the University at the meeting of the University Council on Monday last week. A Wallington pathologist, Dr Lynch had been Chancellor since 1966. He retains his seat on the Council, which he has held since 1946.
