What exec did

What exec did

News from the meeting of July 18; mercifully short at two hours.

* * *

Executive nominated Women's Vice-President Rosemary Booth as Lady Stout Bursar for 1967.

* * *

On the recommendation of Publications Board, Roger Wilde was appointed editor of Salient 1969.

* * *

A letter was received from Salient editor Bill Logan (see main story elsewhere) mentioning difficulty in finding a technical editor. By referring the matter to Finance Committee, Exec indicated a willingness to reconsider its earlier decision to pay the technical editor $300 instead of the $400 advocated by Publications Board.

Accommodation Committee Chairwoman Sue Kedgley said the halls of residence appeal drive by students in Hutt Valley had been put back to September 7 because of the French rugby test on July 27.

* * *

Education Officer Candy McGrath said her committee had decided to circulate a petition urging the Vice-Chancellor "to reopen investigations into the value of the compulsory foreign language requirement", Exec members and all students were asked to co-operate in getting at least 1000 signatures.

* * *

A committee of the Cultural Affairs Committee and Exec officers was set up under the chairmanship of Pip Davys to investigate the complex questions of cultural club's affiliations and grants.

* * *

Remits were sent to NZUSA Winter Council asking the national students' association to act upon previous accommodation remits; to seek representation at the VUW-organised universities conference next February; and to support all students' associations in their efforts for greater student participation and improved channels of communications within the universities.

* * *

NZUSA was asked to support the abolition of foreign language requirements; to hold a conference of overseas students within the next year; and to make a submission to government giving reasons for not setting up the proposed Omega radio station.

* * *

Malcolm Grover was a surprise seconder of two remits on Africa. One wants students' associations to raise aid for Biafra to be sent through the Red Cross; the other seeks condemnation of all countries supplying arms 10 the Nigerian belligerents.

* * *

NZUSA was also asked to comply with the request of Arts Council for financial support for cultural activities in the individual universities.

* * *

Finally the national body was called upon to investigate Christmas vacation employment for students and, if necessary, to publicise employment needs.

* * *

Quote of the evening: Treasurer Murray Radford (on remit to NZUSA), "What's this?" President Doug White, "It's alright; we won't be here next year".

Exec will meet again Tuesdey, August 6.
