His flyblown fingers
were clammy and heated
I saw in those distant eyes
A shimmer of once rejected light.
I felt for that poor soul
As one feels for a particular marshmallow at the bottom of a bag
Squashing the others to get to it
Prodding it out, half its original size
Chewing it with relish
And once swallowed—forgotten!
