"That God does not exist" was once more placed before the multitudes last week in a lunch-hour debate in the Memorial Theatre.
Representing the Atheist Society and for the affirmative were Owen Gager and Niel Wright, and for the negative Kevin Clements (SCM) and Gerard Curry. Chairman was Bruce Babington.
"Theirs is not philosophy." Owen Sager said of the negative, "but special pleading. If God is omnipotent then He is responsible for everything
"If He did exist it would be necessary to destroy Him."
Kevin Clements suggested that "there are some things that suggest that God exists. "God." he said, "is a creating force."
Niel Wright argued the arbitrary nature of any belief that God exists. "You cannot take any time in space." he said, "and say that what is here is because of God . . ."
The Chair did not put the motion to the vote as he considered it a matter of personal conscience.
