Aussie sports decision detrimental—I. H. Boyd

"Detrimental to both New Zealand and Australian sport" was the manner in which the newly elected President of New Zealand Universities Sports Union, Mr. I. H. Boyd, described the unilateral decision by the Australian Universities' Sports Union.

He was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the NZ-

USU held at Victoria recently. This surprise decision of the Australians, made in breach of previous agreements between the Australian and New Zealand bodies, was announced to the meeting by current Vice President, Gordon Hewitt.

Mr. Hewitt told how the Australians had decided that future visits by New Zealand teams should be curtailed to the city in which the respective Inter-Varsity Tournament was being held.

Practice in the past has been to complete a tour of other Australian Universities after participating in an Inter-Varsity tournament in that country. This has been beneficial to sportsmen of both countries, a recent example being the tour last year by a NZU cricket team, when many of its members on return, made their way into Plunket shield sides. "Attributable," said a cricket spokesman. "in a large part to experience gained on the tour," It is now possible that this reciprocal practice will have to stop.

The meeting unanimously endorsed the action of the outgoing executive in proposing to boycott tours to Australia if they were to be effected by the Australian decision. New Zealand's attitude to Australian tours to this country will continue as in the past and it is hoped in this way to force the Australians to reconsider and reverse their decision.

Said Mr. Boyd; "Sports Union views the situation with grave concern and if necessary will send a delegate to Australia to try and resolve the situation in our favour."

Other significant decisions to emerge from the AGM were approval of the transfer of Women's Outdoor Basketball from an Easter to a Winter tournament sport. This was sought after by basketball representatives on the grounds that Easter tournament conincides with the commencement of the Basketball season.

For this reason it is imposssible to enter in tournament, the best side possible from the individual Universities. This in turn affected the selection of NZU teams. In giving their approval, the meeting felt that the advantage to Basketball outweighed the disavantages to the winter tournament sports of Indoor Basketball and Volleyball.

It was decided that in future executive should keep a closer watch on the organized social functions at tournaments to ensure that participation in "wet" activities did not develop out of perspective to the participation in tournament sports.

The Finance Committee approved new arrangements for the financing of tournament skiing. Under this new arrangement, skiers will no longer be required to pay for expenses incurred on the Ski Tows whilst in actual conpetition.

The following were elected to the executive for the incoming year. President. Mr. Ian Boyd: Vice-Presidents. Messrs Gordon Hewitt and Tim Dobbie; Secretary. Mr. Ray Mathews; Treasurer. Mr. Taio Verhoeven; Finance Secretary. Mr. Tony Hassed; Tours Officer, Miss Pat Bird; Contests Officer, Mr. John Stevens; Committee, Messrs Peter Hampton and David Hogg. Mr. Tom Gault was reelected as chairman of the "blues" panel.
