Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 30, No. 2. 1967.

[introduction]

Victoria's Strong contingent at Evans Bay will be spearheaded by C. Morris, D. Tweedie, A. Robinson, C. Murray and A. Stevenson, The girls will include such, names as Penny Howarth, Winslade, and Rosemary Afkin.

Highlight of tournament athletics will be the steeplechase event. In this, current national champion, R. Batten, Auckland will again clash with the national runner-up, C. Morris of Victoria.

Auckland's Clarke, the junior national champion over 440 yards, will be a likely starter in the 440 yards at Easter. Should he start he will be racing against national finalists D. Cairns, Otago, and D. Tweedie, Victoria.

Semi-finalists in the sprints at nationals and now competing again against one another at tournament are A. Robinson, Victoria, and M. Poulson, Canterbury.

The hurdles events should provide interest with Victoria's Murray and Stevenson challenging the strong Otago contingent which includes Angus Welsh and A. Cranshaw. Welsh, younger brother of Empire Gold Medallist Peter Welsh, hurdled into third place at the recent national championships.

Glamour in the one and three mile events will be provided by John Beckett of Auckland. Beckett is the current NZU record holder for the one mile with a time of 4min 6.4secs.

NZU record holder over 100 and 200 vards with times of 10.8 and 24.4 seconds, the 220 yards national champion, Penny Howarth will be teaming with 'fresher' Rosemary Afkin in the sprints for Victoria. Rosemary was fifth at nationals in the Women's 220 yards. Victoria's main opposition in these sprints is likely to come from Rosemary and Lorraine Tong of Auckland.

The 440 yards is expected to provide a close race with Victoria Blue, Pat Winslade fighting the finish out with the Tong sisters.

In the women's field events, Brenda Walker of Gisborne, studying at Otago, will have a decided advantage. Second in the women's discus at nationals this year she is unlikely to find anybody who can present a serious challenge to her at tournament.
