Rugby attack

Christchurch: University rugby's chickens, it semis, are coming home to roost. Canterbury students at their half-yearly meeting, strongly endorsed an Otago University move to restrain the New Zealand University Rugby Football Council and restrict selection for NZU teams to bona fide students.

The matter was brought to the executive's attention by Otago and referred by them to the student meeting, to test its feeling. The motion Is to come before the NZUSA winter meeting in Auckland.

Otago were to present two remits to NZUSA. said Mr. Dennis. One sought to inform the rugby council that It was not entitled to use NZU blazers and badges. The second asked individual students associations to press their own rugby clubs to change their eligibility rules.

For the Rugby Club. Mr. Brooker said that Otago and Lincoln were special cases. Otago's courses were longer and Lincoln pulled in hardened men only attending wool classing courses.

"The NZU team gives mans young student players the opportunity to get to the top quickly. Otago's Chris Laid-law got to All Black halfback from playing for NZU."

Mr. Brooker said the meeting had power or right to dictate to the NZURFC.

"But NZUSA can prevent rugby from using the name university." replied Mr. Peter Rosier.

The motion was passed by the 130 students present with Six recorded dissents and one abstention.
