Rankine Brown building— whose many shortcomings were detailed in Salient 8, has suffered three power blackouts this week.

On Wednesday, 9am lectures were abandoned. Yesterday, all lectures were abandoned.

The library closed six and a half hours early because no artificial lighting was available.

Students even at 2 pm found the lightless library too dark for concentrated work.

Work at the circulation desk on the main floor was carried out by kerosene light.

The power cut resulted from a fault in the main cable supplying the building.

In a letter to Salient, student John D. Neas says:

"I don't wish to cast any aspersions on the character of Mr. Holyoake, but I should like to draw attention to the fact that the lighting system functioned perfectly until after the building was opened by the aforementioned."
