Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 29, No. 1. 1966.

Shand Vote Fiasco

Shand Vote Fiasco

New Executive treasurer David Shand gained his appointment with difficulty.

In a rare event, contending candidates presented themselves for co-option following the resignation of former treasurer Keven Tate.

Applicants were Dave Shand, a former executive treasurer and commerce graduate, and Alan Jamieson, who has had six years in an accountant's office and is a commerce student.

Dave Shand was permitted at the meting to make a short statement to executive before leaving for a prior engagement.

President Chris Robertson immediately afterwards called for executive members to indicate their preferences on a piece of paper and hand them to him.

A protest was made that Alan Jamieson had not had a chance to speak—he was temporarily absent, at this time—it was apparently over-ruled and the ballot proceeded.

The result, of this ballot was not declared but Salient has good reason to believe that it favoured Shand 6-5.

New Vote

When Jamieson returned to the meeting later he was given an opportunity to speak.

A new ballot was then taken, on the grounds that the previous one was not recorded in the minutes.

As the result of this ballot, Jamieson was declared elected.

It was then discovered that the association's constitution states that wherever possible a "qualified" accountant should occupy the position of treasurer.

Alan Jamieson claimed he was "qualified," although he does not hold either a B.Comm. or an Aranz.

Chris Robertson then undertook to obtain an opinion on the matter from the association's financial advisers. As a result of this opinion Mr. Shand has been appointed treasurer.
