Another Vic. Student Makes Good

Another Vic. Student Makes Good

Salient Reporter

Alister Taylor, executive secretary, was elected president of NZUSA at the final session of Easter Council. He obtained an overwhelming majority against John Perham, former NZUSA secretary.

In his election speech Taylor attacked NZUSA (and indirectly Perham) for not keeping the constituent universities fully informed of its activites.

Alluding to the Auckland walkout over the budget dispute. Mr. Taylor stated that the disruption and disunity of NZUSA was "symptomatic of unco-ordination within the resident executive."

He said that NZUSA had not stimulated student action as VUW had done. "They should have been leading all universities in a protest against Government inaction."

"NZUSA is intrinsically valuable" said Taylor in conclusion. "All associations and all students must put something into it instead of expecting to get something out."

Helen Sutch, Victoria's women's vice-president and chairman of the International Affairs Committee, was elected unopposed to International vice-president of NZUSA.

These two are probably the youngest ever who have filled these positions. Ultimately they are responsible to 20,000 students of New Zealand.
