Overspending Justified

Overspending Justified

"NZUSA's budget has risen because it is endeavouring to do more." This is the claim of the outgoing treasurer, Tom Robins.

Asked to comment on Auckland's stand at NZUSA's Easter Council, Mr. Robins said that special projects had caused the budget to rise.

Actual administrative costs remained about the same, he said They will total £2450 this coming year.

Examples of the special projects are the seminar on updating the Parry report (budgeted at £125) and the seminar on student union buildings (£100).

NZUSA overspent its 1964-1965 budget by £1000. Mr. Robins said that the largest single cause of this was the International Student Conference held at Christchurch last year. This had cost over £500.

Higher travel costs of NZUSA Executive members and the loss on sponsored overseas study tours accounted for another £250.

"The budget overspending is not as bad as it looks," Mr. Robins claimed. The great majority of the items had been covered by prior motions, even though they had not been included in the budget.
