Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 6. 1965.

Six Students Make Blues

Six Students Make Blues

At the conclusion of the recent Easter Tournament held in Christchurch, six Victoria University students were awarded Blues.

For athletics, Brian Milne and Penny Haworth; for swimming, John Palmer; for rowing, John Gibbons; for outdoor basketball, Jan Wright; and for tennis, John Souter. At least one unit must be passed in the year of award for a Blue to be ratified.

John Palmer: a first year Commerce student, John is one of New Zealand's most promising young swimmers. He was second to Robbie Walker in the 110yds freestyle at this year's National Championships in a time well under the NZU record, and although not producing quite this form at Christchurch, he still won the NZU event very comfortably. Since Tournament, John has been selected for the 30-strong training squad for the coming Empire Games.

John Gibbons: third year Commerce student. John represented New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics and has just recommenced his studies this year. He rowed for NZU in 1962 and 1963 as well as this year; he was also a member of this year's Wellington provincial rowing squad.

Janet Wright: second year Science student. Jan's play as goal-attack for this year's tournament team was the principal reason for the excellent showing by the Victoria girls. Although plagued by a knee injury, Jan has been a Wellington representative and looks to be set for another successful season.

Penny Haworth: a first year Arts student. At last season's National Athletic Championships Penny was placed second in the 220yds and third in the 100. Down at Tournament she took second place in the 100 and the 80 metres hurdles, and then won the 220 in a time well under both the NZU record and the NZU Blues standard. Penny could eventually take the place of Doreen Porter in national women's athletics.

Brian Milne: Commerce student. Brian is one of the country's upcoming middle distance runners. He was placed second in the half-mile at the National championships and won this event very comfortably at Tournament.

John Souter: fifth year Commerce student. John was undefeated in this year's tournament tennis. He has been of national standard for some time and although ranked sixth last season has been as high as second.

An interesting sidelight on these awards is that all the Victoria Blues-winners are part-time students, every one of them. Full-timers should be ashamed.
