Salient: Victoria University Students' Paper. Vol. 28, No. 6. 1965.

Fate Unknown — Vic "B" Hostel

Fate Unknown
Vic "B" Hostel

It has been rumoured that the Vic. B. hostel is to be sold at the end of this year.

When Miss S. Ogilvie, the secretary of the Women's Hostels Association, was approached on the matter, she stressed that no definite decision has been reached, but that it has been discussed.

This hostel is run in conjunction with the Vic. A. hostel by a committee from the Presbyterian and Anglican churches. Miss Ogilvie, when asked whether Vic. B. is economic to run, replied that a hostel really needs about 70 students before it is an economic establishment. However, the problem of Vic B. arises from the fact that it only accommodates 16 girls and one warden, whereas Vic. A. accommodates 49 girls and two wardens. Vic. B. also needs a lot of money to be spent on it.

At present, the idea in the "melting-pot" is to expand Vic. A. in order to admit another 13 students.

It has been suggested that the Developments Committee of the Association buy the section at the back of Vic. A., and add the extensions there (No. 288). However, they will need funds to do this, and an appeal could be launched in the near future: they also hope to gain a subsidy for any building project.

Salient has been promised any further news about this situation, and Miss Ogilvie assures the Vic. B. residents that they will be informed of any decisions as soon as possible.
