Lord: The Money Rolls In

Lord: The Money Rolls In

Fund raising for a 300-bed hall of residence at Otago University to celebrate the university's centennial in 1969 has been startlingly successful. The building will cost about £600,000 but if the University can raise £200,000 by public appeal the Government will provide £400,000 on a 2-for-1 subsidy basis.

An assurance of this was given by the Minister of Labour. Mr. T. P. Shand, at a luncheon to launch the appeal on November 25.

"The task of raising the other £200,000 is a formidable one" he is reported by Otago student paper CRITIC as saying: "But don't let it drag on—do it quickly and willingly."

Those present accepted the challenge. Within minutes the Otago Savings Bank pledged £20,000 and the Dunedin City Council £21,000, The Mayor. Mr. T. K. S. Sidey, said it was a fitting way to celebrate the Council's centennial this year.

National Mortgage and Agency held back until its centennial ball that night to top off a day of surprises. The chairman of the company, Lord Glenconner then announced NMA's gift of £75 000.

So £116,000 had been subscribed in a day, before people had read about the appeal in the next morning's Otago Daily Times.

By the beginning of the university year. CRITIC reported, the amount subscribed had reached £173.632 15/-. despite competing factors such as the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.
