One for Lindy

One for Lindy

woodcut print by E. Mervyn Taylor

A sweep of moondrift spun about a silken brow sat at my feet and spoke delight with spaniel eyes
And once within her laughter took my hand but saw my age and sadly squeezed the flesh that longed to tilt her face and laid it sadly down
Who later on a yawning day threw beach-hot summer sand and then repenting strove to lip my ear; all sun-bold hair and warmth and golden limbs
And who absurd in fourth-form plaits with anxious eyes beseeched approval of a birthday tie
And tearful blamed her subtle breasts and through my sister begged that age should bear no brunt
Who for my glance came shyly in a velvet dress to flaunt the shoulders of my fitful nights
And in my smile read anguish that a younger later lover should caress her molten grace
Who understood and bowed her head and went away.
