New People

New People

The Department of Modern Languages has now obtained a replacement for Professor Conlon, who left in July.

The new arrival. Professor Norish, M.A., Ph.D. (Cambridge University) has taught both at Cambridge and at Keele University in North Staffordshire. Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in England, while Keele is the newest.

Keele University has a particular tendency to prevent specialisation. This idea is being followed up by other universities in England. A foundation course covers the history of civilisation and an introduction into other subjects. The Honours course (following this) is spread over arts and science so that it would lie impossible for anyone doing English say, not to do some Science as well.

Professor Norish has lived in France; he studied at the Sorbonne and was for a time a lecturer at Nancy. His special field of interest is 19th and 20th century French literature.

Although most of his interest is in French he has studied German as well.

This is the first time Professor Norish has been to New Zealand. He has brought his wife and family with him.

Another new face is that of Mr Boyd who has recently arrived to take up the post of Managing-Secretary to the Management Committee of the Student Union.

(It is rumoured that if various services such as Student Health, Lodgings, and Counselling come into being, they will also be part of Mr Boyd's work.)

Mr Boyd has no direct control over the Students' Association but is there to give help if it is required. He has seen much in the way of Student Unions. While an undergraduate at Oxford he ran for the University, and visited Harvard, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts Insitute of Technology. After he completed his National Service he lectured in electrical engineering at Loughborough College of Advanced Technology, and was at that time Assistant Warden in a Hall of Residence.

Before he came to New Zealand Mr Boyd visited the Student Unions of the Universities of Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, London and also Melbourne. This experience he has gained will be useful in his work at Victoria.
