The Overture

The Overture

Sunday afternoon came and Fitzherbert Avenue was closed for a bed-pushing race, and a Southern visitor discovered the pubs were closed also (tut tut).

By the time Monday arrived most were beginning to notice the hospitality—in fact it was so good that at one stage it looked as if Massey might beat Vic for Tournament Shield points. Vic went down 11-10 to Auckland in the table tennis and so it went on through the day in most sports, but then the golfers started doing things.

Overheard at Massey: Aren't those Vic blazers with the braid they have for the old timers very nice.

Tuesday and the Harriers: Well. Vic managed to beat Otago and Lincoln but little else. Some excellent running by some of the Massey boys and the Auckland teaming were a feature of the race.

Overhead at the Hockey: Why didn't the Vic wing bring a brazier and a book with him.

Wednesday dawned with a feeling that Vic might win the fencing and virtually could not lose the golf. We had three of the four semi-finalists in the N.Z.U. championships. Other teams were not quite so good but a sprinkling of Vic people seemed to be in N.Z.U. teams. By now the judo and the squash were over but Vic had not distinguished itself in either field.
