Impassioned Plea; Accusation of Abuses

Impassioned Plea; Accusation of Abuses

"That this Special General Meeting of the Students' Association has no confidence in the Executive of the Association."—Dwyer.

Mr Dwyer made an impassioned plea to the student body—executives tend to be autocratic, corrupt, unprepared to accept new ideas—look at what they write on the Exec, office doors: "Don't hang around Exec, office" . . . "Get Out" (applause) . . . certain groups are given privileges over and above the norm. The Quiet Room has been surrendered to the religious clubs—some members are unable to cope with the burden of duty. Witness the social committee's first meeting: "Special grog-ups" by Exec, are too often abused.

Lewis: Expense is not worth the trouble of a new election. Confusion is not the answer.

Irons: Remove the Exec, because they are corrupt. Put on another Exec. But who?

Blizzard: We haven't the time for the trouble involved in elections while the exams, are so close.

The meeting became somewhat bogged down over the "Quiet Room" issue. The Quiet Room is for prayer and meditation, not for study.

Mr Dwyer's reply had two points:—
(1)You must have the confidence to do without an executive. Civilised intelligent people need no rules, no offensive regulations.
(2)The wording should be "Quiet Reading Room" as it originally was—for everyone's use.

Mr Cornford asked for a secret ballot. Mr Mitchell made a ruling to that effect but his ruling was disagreed with. After un-procedural interference by Messrs Dwyer and Tamassessee the disagreement was substantiated, 70-60.

On show of hands, motion of no confidence was put and lost, 18-101.

Mr Dwyer requested that item 3 be removed from the agenda.
