Men's Hockey

Men's Hockey

This years team is up to the stand ard of most previous VUC XI's and although we do not (in our usual modest way) express great confidence in our own ability to win the Beddon Stick we feel sure that we will not disgrace the Tournament by our presence. There is a solid stratum of senior players together with an influx of keen and promising younger members.

Bruce Bornholdt: (Full-back). This is Bruce's second Tournament and he is an experienced senior player. (Watch out girls). An ex-Hutt Valley High man he has on occasion played some good hard shots in the Wellington competition.

Murray Humphries: (Goalie). Murray made the senior team this year and has acquitted himself well against all Wellington forwards. He played at last Tournament and should have the full confidence of his teammates this year. Like Jaget Inder he is tall, dark and handsome with a tendency to kick.

Robble MacCarthur: (Full-back). First time up for VUC but is a strong man of the Senior Reserve grade. Has determination, a hard hit and a gentle manner.

Keith Beresford: (Right-Half). Another senior man of wide experience. A solid and reliable half especially on defence. Has shown an interest in the importation of Australian ideas into the game.

Bob Calkin: (Centre-Half). An NZU player of both 1953 and 1954. Bob is the most experienced player in the team despite his youth.

He has now curbed a tendency to distribute the ball indiscriminately and directs it in a more defined and controlled manner.

Bruce Buxton: (Left-Half). Another experienced campaigner who saw the light and came to us from Auckland. He is an excellent positional half capable of stopping any right wing one way or another. Most tenacious and angles his passes well.

Barry Cathro: (Half). One of the younger members showing distinct promise and Tournament experience should do him good. (In more ways than one).

Tom Ellison: (Forward). Like Cathro a product of Taranakl and a player who is capable of a sound performance in any position. A senior player this season and good in the circle and on the piano.

Noel Civil: (Forward). Centre forward in the senior team and determined in the circle. Highest goal scorer. A Whangarei man who is prepared to forget the past and concentrate on the future.

Govind Bhula: (Forward). An Indian boy with clever stick work and constructive play. He is a senior Reserve player of note but no relation to cither Babu or Balbir Singh. At the moment we are trying to find out however if he is connected to Community Sing.

Dave Mummery: (Forward). An ex-Palmerston North man and a solicitor to boot. Dave has represented VUC at a previous Tournament and he is a determined player who if all else fails will argue his way into a goal.

Don Matheson: (Forward). Represented VUC last year and is a capable forward on all occasions. He has been a strong player in the Senior Reserve grade and should prove an asset in Dunedin.

Trev de Cleene: (Forward). An ex-Canterbury player who saw the error of his ways. A senior team member whose heart is often in his mouth especially in the circle. Like the Australian marsupial Trev is fast on the hops.

The VUC hockey team war-cry . . . "A handle downed is a tanner drowned."
