Salient. An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria College, Wellington, N.Z. Vol. 18, No. 8. June 17, 1954
John L. G. McLean
John L. G. McLean
The responsibilities and demands of presidential office were fully considered by John before accepting nomination. On accepting he had determined that he could and would undertake everything involved, and that his efforts would not be halfhearted and spasmodic but strenuous and keen.
The government of student affairs should not be based on vague enthusiasm or unrealistic ideals. There is place only for those with their feet-on-the-ground and a practical diplomatic attitude to all questions. This does not mean dull conservatism. Rather, a receptive approach with wholehearted support for all schemes favourable to student amenities.
Any lack of immediate past experience on the Executive has in John's case been more than made up by Committee work and active association with the Drama and Debating, Rugby, Rowing, Tennis and Ski Clubs. He has been actively interested in Extravaganza, Procession, and Tournaments. Two years full-time and two years-part-time has enabled him to see both aides of College life.
