"Salient" has just received an air letter from its old friend and former Editor Alec McLeod, temporarily teaching in London. He tells us that he is off to Prague on August 9 to represent Victoria Stud Ass and the N.Z.S.L.F. at the Festival and Congress of the International Union of Studentas.
"Pritt has just produced a pamphlet on Korea," he writes, referring presumably to former Labour M.p Denis N. Pritt, K.C., "which comes out tomorrow. The two focal points, which emerge are: (1) the illegality of U.N. armed intervention without agreement of all the major powers (Hartley Shawcross has been falling over himself showing that 'always' means 'never'); (2) the other is the Daily Worker reprint of articles in the 'N.Y. Herald-Tribune" showing how the State Department restrained Syngman Rhee's regime from attacking North Korea eight months ago because he was not strong enough, and advised him to wait till he was stronger.
Alec also brings us news of another old "Salient" personality, Mike Murray, erstwhile Exchange Manager and Desk Editor. "Mike and Ginny and Jean and Jonathan (who begins his senarate existence in September) come round here often. They stand a good chance of getting a Council flat this year as they are so poor and have so many children.
"I would like to write an article for 'Salient' on what to do if you want to emigrate to England, but it might look like encouraging intellectexogenesis. The political situation here, and the schools here, are not worth writing about."
Perhaps these things in Prague may deserve an article.
