"Hard Luck, Sir! . . .
An Oxford scholar, in the mouths of most women of sense, is only another word for a wild, ill-bred, awkward animal: and whatever conquests they might formerly boast of, the chief favours they receive now are from their laundresses and bed-makers, or from their daughters who are the toasts of the university and the only objects of their gallantry. . . . Who Cares?
Very few of the women take the least pains to be attractive or mature . . . they run no tailors' bills in the High Street, but deck themselves in hairy woollens and shapeless tweeds . . . Their hair is braided into stringy buns."
