An amusing and down-to-earth tale of the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands, "La Kermesse Heroique" has been widely praised for its portrayal of people as they really are—in fancy dress for safety. Recounting an episode in a Flemish town in which Spanish troops are quartered for a night, it points to the strength of the sexual urge in securing a temporary victory over Flemish patriotism.
