Varsity Senior XI has now put itself into such a strong position for Senior Cricket honours that it seems impossible to dethrone it.

Since the last review in "Salient," the team has played Petone and commenced its final and epoch making game against Karori.

Petone scored 191 and VUC with three wickets for 28 were in a spot of trouble which caused much parochial cheering from Hutt supporters, upon whose grounds the match was played, and whose own team was one point behind varsity. A fine stand of 87 between Oakley 48, and Larkin 52, and Colquhon 28, enabled Varsity to pass Ketone's score with only five wickets down.

At the beginning of the last game against Karori, Varsity still required victory in this match to clinch the competition. On the first day, by running up the grand tally of 386 for 9. the XI played itself Into an exceedingly strong position.

Vance 49 and Larkin 46 paved the way for this score, though with five wickets down for 149 Varsity did not look like making a big score. Oakley and Beard, however, added 79. and Oakley "took complete charge of the Karori attack and went on to make a fine 110."

A spirited 35 not out by Dick Wilde gave the final polish to Varsity's great knock which was well supported by the public and the usual small but vociferous gathering of noble Varsity supporters.

This final game is to be completed on April 6 at the Basin when Karori will have to make a bold bid to catch Varsity's 386.

In conclusion, it seems regrettable that the Wellington selectors did not see fit to include a Varsity representative in the team against the Australians. Wellington's batting exhibition, however, acts as a solace as does the remark, not infrequently heard from the crowd, that the Varsity team would show better batting than Wellington was turning on.

Hockey AGM

The 46th AGM of the Hockey Club held last week was not largely-attended, but a good season is indicated by the enthusiasm of members present, including a good number of returned men. The senior teams especially will benefit from the latter, and a large number of freshers is expected for the junior teams.
