Salient. An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria College, Wellington, N.Z. Vol. 4, No. 9. July 30, 1941

Chapter XX

Chapter XX.

It was a festive occasion. The hall was crammed with students of every shape but of uniform colour. Viki's eyes flitted round the room. Near the back was old-timer Honk Spotney, wearing a loud pullover and making loud noises, and next to him an orchidaceous young man with long fair hair winnowing winsomely in the wind. Viki felt her heart turning over like a pancake. "Who is that?" she hissed.

Fictitia Thrilbreath turned round, revealing a white face surrounded by tousled dark ringlets. "That," said Thrilbreath in a dramatic undertone, "is Flatwit McBashful, the college paronomasiac!"

A series of loud bangs came from the flat form as Cawbird Foley repeatedly hit the nail on the head and then retired amid mingled boos and cheers.

"Who's that?" asked Viki in a breathless whisper. A dynamic figure had leapt to the platform. "Let us get behind Churchill!" he blared. To give him a push, Viki surmised. But no! The young man approved of V's. Quite right, thought Viki. Mr. Churchill probably wore them himself, or perhaps B.V.D's. After all, trailing clouds of glory weren't exactly an adequate cover.

"That," said Fictitia vibratingly, "is Flimsy Faithin."

"Faith in what?" asked Viki.

Yes, you know the answer, so there really isn't much point in reading the next issue of our thrilling serial. But why not go to see Flimsy perform at the Plunket Medal contest next Saturday night?
