Salient. An Organ of Student Opinion at Victoria College, Wellington, N.Z. Vol. 4, No. 4. April 24, 1941

[Introduction]

To all except the very earnest young men with a Theory of Art, the idea of student culture is but very vaguely formulated. Culture is something you sandwich in with five minutes at the periodical table between lectures or something to be examined and cultivated when that far-off divine event—that peculiar process known as completing—occurs. But during the three or four years spent at a University only a very few concern themselves with the exploration and development of adequate self-expression.

In so far as certain faculties attach little importance to the fostering of the critical abilities,—and others totally ignore them,—the opportunities for any comprehensive interchange of ideas on matters not dealt with in the syllabus are lamentably few.
