No Man's Land — The Christian Life

No Man's Land

The Christian Life.

Dear "Salient,"

"Jaswin" and "Spartacus" seem to have the conveniently distorted idea of Christianity which is typical of a Communist.

Now, the difference between a Communist and a Christian is this:

While the Communist is howling on platform and paper about the miseries of the working classes and the wickedness of the deceitful, bloated, tyrannical, money-grabbing, lying, robbing, murderous, adulterous, and altogether superfluous bourgeoisie, the Christian is walking the streets of poverty with good bread for the starving; he is leading the steps of the homeless to a bed in his own house for the night; he is tending the sores of the drunkards in the gutters where they lie; on the back of the shivering child, he puts his woollen coat, nor counts the cost.

Which is easier, "Spartacus"? And which does more good?

The Communist seeks to better the status quo at the expense of the bourgeoisie, but not at his own expense; the Christian does the contrary. The Communist will discuss only other people's misdeeds, never his own; the Christian does the contrary. The Christian is a pacifist because he considers the lives and happiness of his enemies of more importance than his own; the Communist does the contrary.

As long as there are selfish and conceited people, there will be Communism and Capitalism. As long as there are unselfish and humble people, there will be Christianity.

For this reason Christianity will outlive Communism. Communism is concerned only with material welfare, but Christianity offers something greater, something eternal: The Happiness of the Mind.
