BABER, James 1821–1898

A trained architect who came out to Auckland 1842 on Tuscan, a fellow passenger of Edward Ashworth q.v. Worked for Survey Department: was Deputy Waste Land Commissioner 1858, Inspector of Buildings 1861. When architect Reader Wood visited England 1864 Baber took charge of Wood's architectural practice, the firm becoming Wood and Baber. He was one of those who planned the page 29 first Society of Artists in Auckland in 1869 and was its first chairman.
