WELCH, Nugent Herman 1881–1970

Born Akaroa while father, painter J. S. Welch, was surveying there. Studied for a short time at Canterbury School of Art, then at Wellington Technical College; James Scott, Herdman Smith, M. E. Tripe and Maud Sherwood were among his instructors, but he was essentially self taught. In oils he owed himself indebted to Sir Alfred East. Served 1914–18 war as official artist with the NZ Expeditionary Force. Became well known as a leading Wellington plein air artist and was one of the Silverstream school led by Nairn. Exhibited: NZ Academy of Fine Arts Wtn 1904–35; ASA 1913–15 (Auckland subjects). Represented: major New Zealand galleries (a large collection NAG); Sarjeant and Hocken.
