Nineteenth Century New Zealand Artists: A Guide & Handbook

VON MEYERN, Ellen d.1912?

VON MEYERN, Ellen d.1912?

Probably daughter of Arthur von Meyern and earlier living with him in Dunedin. Arrived Auckland c.1895 and studied at Elam School of Art, specialising in portraiture. Exhibited ASA 1901–12. Listed as Auckland artist 1911–12 Wise's. Shared a studio with her sister Blanche 1901–05, painted portraits of Blanche and another sister (one reproduced in New Zealand Graphic 1903), of people in the music and theatre worlds, of Pope Pius (presumably from a photograph) and of Maoris. The year after Ellen Von Meyern's name disappeared from listings a Mrs Camilla Von Meyern is listed as living in Ligar Street, Auckland and Von Meyern tea rooms are listed in Queen Street, all suggesting that for the last few years Ellen Von Meyern had been the main bread winner of the family. Represented: National Museum.
