No. 143, 1903.—Petition of Heni te Rau (Mrs. Jane Brown), of Kohimarama, Auckland.
Petitioner prays that a reserve set aside for the Ngatimutunga hapu in the Taranaki District way be exempted from the operation of the West Coast (North Island) Settlements Reserves Act, and the land handed over for the owners to manage for themselves.
I am directed to report that the Committee recommends—,
- (1.) That the Government should instruct the Public Trustee to conserve the interests of the Natives occupying the land;
- (2.) That the balance of the reserve, beyond that now occupied by the petitioners' hapu, should be granted as intended in the original award; and
- (3.) That the charges for administration by the Public Trustee under the West Coast Settlements Reserves Acts should be reduced.
