Reports of the Native Affairs Committee, 1902.

No. 37, 1902. —Petition of Te Ara Takana and Another

No. 37, 1902. —Petition of Te Ara Takana and Another.

Petitioners pray for investigation into their claims to land within the confiscated area in the Waikato district.

I am directed to report that, having due regard to all the circumstances, and having considered the laws under which confiscations were made during the time of war, the Committee is of opinion that it would be unwise and improper to open grave questions of State which have been firmly settled and decided publicly for many years, and therefore, in so far as the petition aims at a reinvestigation of confiscated-land claims, it has no recommendation to make; but any claims founded on mistake or injustice might be dealt with by the Government on the merits of each individual case when considering the question of making provision for landless Natives.
