No. 287, 1897.—Petition of J. Brown and Another, for the Kauri Timber Company (Limited).
Petitioners claim to have purchased the lease of Kuaotunu No. 3 Block, originally held by William Meikle, which gives the right to remove all the kauri and other timber from off the block, and state that through the action of the Government in purchasing the freehold they have been deprived of their rights; they pray that these rights be restored, or adequate compensation granted in lieu thereof.
| 1. | That the Kauri Timber Company's claim to have the legal right to the timber on Kuaotunu No. 3 Block has not been sustained. |
| 2. | That the company having no legal redress, and the Committee believing the company purchased from Mr. Meikle without being in the first instance aware of the defects in the title, recommends, without prejudice, and as a final settlement of the matter, that the Government should pay to the company a sum of £750 with interest at the rate of 5 per cent. from the date of the purchase of the lease from Mr. Meikle (1st September, 1888). |
