Reports of the Native Affairs Committee, 1895

Nos. 35, 105, and 156.—Petitions of Paratene Matenga and 181 Others; Taituha Hape and 68 Others; H. Tare Tikao and 22 Others

Nos. 35, 105, and 156.—Petitions of Paratene Matenga and 181 Others; Taituha Hape and 68 Others; H. Tare Tikao and 22 Others.

Petitioners allege that the Maoris do not receive proper notices relating to the rating of their land, and that the rating-values are wrongly assessed. They pray that the Native race may be exempt from taxation.

I have the honour to report that the Committee recommends that these petitions should be referred to the Government for the purpose of having the allegations as to insufficient rating-notices and wrong valuations fully inquired into; and they also recommend that all local bodies should be instructed to insure that Native owners are made fully aware of all matters relating to the rating of their properties.
