Exciting new patterning and a growing use of grey forecasted for 1986.

Fashion is not only the domain of the ragtrade. As domestic and contract design fields continue to grow, interior textile manufacturers rely on forecasts of consumer tastes to keep their products up-to-date. International trend collections from the International Wool Secretariat Interior Textiles Styling Service take the guesswork out of style and colour for yarns, carpets and fabrics. These trend collections are a major international source of styling information for textile manufacturers.

The most important part of the forecasting work of IWS is to complement the ideal fibre performance of wool with the

best design and most fashion-right colours and styles. For design-conscious manufacturers of contract carpets especially, the IWS service is extremely important in their yearly ranges.

Ideas from the collection can be picked up by manufacturers in 45 countries and many new contract carpets available currently in New Zealand are the result of direct inspiration.

The IWS collection for 1986, Flash Lines, shows two strong trends for interior textiles: exciting new patterning and the growing use of grey for the contract market.

Flash Lines patterns take their form from today's modern technology: strong diagonals, optical lines, linear looks and graphic oscillations in patterns, textures, tweeds and heathers.

The designs included in the Flash Lines collection are complicated patterns execited on crisp, smooth surfaces. There are 21 new colours in the collection, and in both carpets and textiles, a deep, intense base of strong colour is combined with flashes of neon brights.

In carpeting, the continuing development of wool tweed and heather styles emphasise the fact that design need not be obtrusive. Wool heathers blend subtle natural shades with flashes of the collection's brights for a "solid" carpet that works visual magic.

Grey has taken over as the new favourite on the contract market. As a long wearing, fashionable, yet blendable colour, grey, mixed with various tints and shades of blues, rose and purples, has been gaining a wide usage throughout the States and Europe.

Upholstery fabrics use the same design ideas and colours as the carpets of the Flash Lines collection. Strong opticals and subtle blending of colours bring added interest to essential simple fabric finishings These fabrics in 100% pure new wool will be both fashionable and hardwearing for domestic or contract use.

New Zealand manufacturers, architects and specifiers can view the collection at the New Zealand Wool Board. While you are reading this, IWS, which works two years in advance, is busy on the trends collection for 1987. The better part of this year has been dedicated to researching colour trends, and the 1987 styling brief was distributed this August for our manufacturers to design to the brief for inclusion in the collection. The collection will be launched by IWS at Heimtextil in Germany next January. Work will begin shortly thereafter on the 1988 collection.

The new exciting interior textile products of the IWS trend collection, made by manufacturers world-wide, are style leaders in pure new wool. The Flash Lines collection will be shown by the Wool Board to architects and specifiers in October and November and designs you see on this page may soon be part of the furnishings available in New Zealand.
