Editorial Note

On the night before her death in 1930, I promised Makereti to dedicate her book for her as I have done, and to remove certain karakia, which also I have done. She asked me to communicate with the Arawa people to make certain that all that was written was true, and that nothing forbidden should be published. This I did, sending the manuscript to New Zealand by her son, who undertook to place it before the Arawa, and let me know if there were any error or objection. I have just received the manuscript, corrected by members of the Council, but especially by Te Aonui and Bella Wiari, Makereti's son and sister. I alone am to blame if there is any error in describing the plates, for she died suddenly, just before the time she had set to write full descriptions.

Her mother's name was originally Pia te Rihi. But I have used the name Pia te Ngarotu, which she took after her uncle's death, to signify that he “passed standing”.

I am grateful to Professor Henry Balfour and also Dr. Raymond Firth for advice on doubtful points while reading the proofs.
