A compendium of official documents relative to native affairs in the South Island, Volume One.

[Translation.]

[Translation.]

We have received from Mr. McLean, on this the tenth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-four, the sum of five hundred pounds (£500) sterling, as payment for the whole of the lands to which we lay claim in the Middle Island, or Wai Pounamu, that is to say,— The lands which we occupied at Wairau, at Whanganui, at Te Awaiti, Totaranui, Te Hoiere, Kaiaua, Whakapuaka, Whakatu, Waimea, Moutere, Motueka; from thence to Motupipi, to Aorere, to Pakawau, to Whanganui, to Paturau, Te Awaruato, and from thence to Arahura. It is to be understood, and we now pledge ourselves, never again to raise any claim to the above-described lands, neither to the islands adjacent thereto, which we have now entirely surrendered to Victoria, the Queen of 79

England, and to the Kings or Queens who may succeed her for ever. Further, we, the tribes who are now residing on the Northern Island, viz., the Puketapu, Otarua, and Ngamotu, that is to say, the whole of the tribes on this side of the Straits, pledge ourselves never to renew our claims to these the lands which we have sold and parted with for ever.

And we have this day taken leave of and bid farewell to this land, and, in token of having done so, we have hereunto affixed our names and marks.
