No. 1.
Despatch from Governor Grey to Earl Grey.
My Lord,—
In reference to the correspondence which has passed upon the subject of the settlement proposed to be founded in New Zealand by the Canterbury Association, I have the honor to transmit, for your Lordship's information, a copy of a further correspondence which has passed between myself and the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company and the Agent of the Canterbury Association on this subject. The only point in this correspondence which appears to require your Lordship's particular page 250attention is the view which I have taken of the claims of the French Company, and of the extent to which I consider the local Government is bound to consider those claims, as stated in the enclosed letter from the Civil Secretary to the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, of the 27th of April last.
I have, &c.,
G. Grey.
The Right. Hon. Earl Grey.
