Acknowledgement

To all the histories, diaries, records, and friends (too numerous to mention individually) who made this book possible I offer my gratitude—and a measure of resentment because they were so very numerous. With such a plethora of data (often confused), it was necessary to make my choice, so leaving a happy chance for the critics. If none of my characters is entirely mythical I still dare think that only those well known to history can be traced—supposing anyone is interested to the extent of wanting to do it.
