[miscellaneous pragraphs]

Petitions to Parliament and other august bodies are familiar enough; but a formal petition from professional men to a Minister of the Crown is a novelty, and one of those things that one would scarcely expect in « a democratic community. » From a Palmerston paper we quote the following ludicrous item, published in all seriousness: « A petition which is to be presented to the Minister of Justice, asking that the Court-room be provided with a fire-place, was circulated amongst the members of the legal profession at the R.M. Court sittings yesterday, and was signed by them all. It is to be hoped that the Minister will see his way clear to grant this concession, as it is a matter which should receive the most favorable consideration. »
