A correspondent in the north asks what is the correct division of « mining. » According to all English usage, mining. In the United States the practice is variable; but every other consideration is there subordinated to even spacing; and divisions appear in high-class periodicals, such as Harper's Magazine, which no English book-office would tolerate.

Mr. Seffern, with his usual enterprise, has permanently recorded the Taranaki jubilee celebrations in a special illustrated 16-page number, entitled the Taranaki Jubilee Chronicle. As a New Zealand historian, Mr. Seffern takes the first rank, and in the memorial number he has given a succinct account of Taranaki's first half-century—not forgetting names and dates of. arrival of the early pioneers, and even a list of the golden weddings celebrated in the district. From the length of this list we should infer that Taranaki air is favorable to longevity.

On the 10th April, at Auckland, Mr Duncan, Secretary of the Central Liberal Committee at the last elections, was sued at the Resident Magistrate's Court by Mr Brett, proprietor of the Star, for £15 for advertising, &c. Defendant confessed to the amount, but made the statement that the expense had been incurred on behalf of Messrs Rees, Shera, and Napier. Rees had paid £60, Shera £22 15s, and Napier £21. Mr Ress also offered to pay a share of the outstanding liabilities, £60, but the others would not come to any arrangement. Judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs.

The conference of the Federated Association of Master Printers was held at Dunedin; but the proceedings have not yet been made public, with the exception of the following resolutions, which were unanimously agreed to:— « That in the opinion of this council Government should as far as possible distribute the printing required amongst the private printing houses of the colony by tender, the competition of the Government printing office being unfair to local industry, in which a very large amount of capital is invested, and which affords a large measure of employment; also that the printing and publication by the Government of such works as law reports, transactions of the N.Z. Institute, and Buller's books of birds, is a distinct interference with the printing trade of the colony. » It was also agreed to express sympathy with the principle of a combined Board of Conciliation.
