[« A Catholic Jackass »]

« A Catholic Jackass » is the heading of a long and warm article in the Dunedin (Roman Catholic) Tablet devoted to the vivisection of the Wellington Catholic Times. Alluding to the Pontifical benediction which its adversary has received, it says it has been in this case bestowed on a religious Ally Sloper. St. John, it observes, had his eagle, St. Anthony his fishes—and why should not St. Francis de Sales have his jackass? The writer apparently supposes this to be witty, and seems to have no consciousness of any irreverence. The Times is quite able to retaliate in kind. « When Greeks joined Greeks, then was the tug of war, » ought henceforth to read, « When Romans joined Romans, » —or, ؟shall we say, « when Bishop meets Archbishop » ؟Time was, by the way, when to be called a Jackass would have been an honor rather than a reproach. Our erudite and sarcastic contemporary can scarcely have forgotten the ancient and beautiful Hymn for Sunday next before Easter—

Amen, dicas Asine,
Jam satur ex gramine.
Amen, amen, itera
Aspernare Vetera,
!He! Sire Ane,! He!
