At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Christ-church, on the 16th inst, Mr Beetham, E. M., fined Messrs Selig & Bird each £50, in default three months imprisonment, for receiving at the office of their paper, the Referee, money for investment on the totalisator at the Amberley steeplechase meeting. The magistrate said that the facts showed unmistakably that they had been keeping or running a totalisator on their own account. The language of the judgment was very severe. Defendants gave notice of appeal. Four other informations were withdrawn.
