As the financial proposals of the Atkinson ministry have not yet passed the House of Representatives, detailed comment on the tariff would be premature. However, it has practically been adopted, and only minor changes are likely to be made. A proposed tariff, less obnoxious than this, cost the late Government their seats, and the country, by a large majority, declared against increased duties; but a large proportion of the new members have forgotten their election pledges. Not a single article is henceforth to be admitted duty-free; import duties are raised from 15 to 20 and 25 per cent., and the whole tendency of the fiscal proposals is to cripple industry and paralyse trade.
