A contemporary says that « an old resident, Miss —, has entered the matrimonial state. » We wonder if the bride and bridegroom liked that way of putting it.

In his account of a ball the editor wrote of a lady of commanding presence: « Mrs—, who possesses a form that Juno might envy. » The sub read the proofs, and the horrified scribe next morning found the name of the goddess transformed into « Jumbo »!
